You have now joined an important grassroots cheetah conservation community made up of people of all ages. The choices are yours. This is just a preliminary step! Welcome.
The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a species of big cat that inhabits the savannas of Africa. Cheetahs are known for their trademark spots, elegant form, and distinctive teardrop markings, but their most well known attribute is their speed. As the fastest land animal, cheetahs can run up to 80 mph (130 km/h). They use this speed to hunt animals such as gazelles, wildebeest calves, antelope, and impalas.
The cheetah population has declined by 90% in the past 100 years. The reasons for this rapid decline include baby cheetahs being killed by animals such as lions, hyenas, and leopards, poaching, loss of prey, habitat loss, and cheetah cub trafficking. We can't solve ALL of these problems all at once, but we can make a start.
School projects are a great way to raise awareness. So are community events, runs, and just about anything you can imagine! For most of us, cheetahs are far away. It takes brains and imagination to bring their plight to the forefront.
Remember that you have a lot of personal political power. Use it! Look out for internet materials that encourage poaching and theft, for instance. Alert conservation groups and authorities about this illegal behavior. Consider yourself deputized. Make saving the cheetah a small part of your mission, along with us. That is a great way to make a difference!
Ask your friends and family members to join the fight. Imagine a future where there are no cheetahs... And imagine a future where this amazing species has been rescued from extinction, in no small part, because of YOUR efforts! This is a part of the conservation movement where you alone really can make a big difference. You can even make a presentation to your family at the dinner table. That is a very responsible and reasonable thing to do. Share facts with your friends and family... You'll usually find that they're interested!
At the moment, my pals and I are putting together a list of interested people just like you who want to get involved! Sure... you could call it an "army" in waiting. We are learning more about who exactly shares our interests, and we may be small right now, but we have big dreams of events, political presence, trips, and a real opportunity to save the cheetah. Send us a note via the form at the bottom of this page and let us know you're on board. We have no "overhead," and we're not asking for money: we just see a BIG problem that we KNOW we can solve... With dedication, communication, and a heart-felt effort.
Sometimes in life it is hard know where to start when you see so many problems. Maybe you would like to start with me and my friends... By helping to save a beautiful endangered animal. Although there are many different threats leading to the decline of the cheetah population, we have decided to focus like a laser on cheetah cub trafficking. The problem is big, but it's simple, too. We need to work together to raise awareness. My aim with this little website and your important companionship is to raise awareness about cheetah conservation.
My name is Simonne and I’ve been interested in cheetahs and cheetah conservation efforts since before I can remember. I am not sure exactly why, but it might have something to do with their beauty, rareness, and singular attributes. Over time, as I shared information about the species' problems with others, I learned that cheetah conservation presented problems that really were solvable... And that it really WAS possible to make an effective difference in this world. All we need is awareness and a little teamwork.
Watch my video, if you like, in order to learn more about cheetah cub trafficking. Share it with friends and family to help raise awareness, if you like, and send me an e-mail so we can stay in touch––in the zone––and I can occasionally alert you about Cheetah news as well as conservation activities and possibilities!
Thank you for taking this small step, with me, to work together to save the endangered cheetah.
